Hey folks!  I'm happy to announce, in a little less than three weeks, I'll be doing an art show featuring ten brand new pieces and a bunch of old favorites here in Champaign, Illinois!  Better yet, I will be showing alongside my talented and incomparably cool sister, Kate Cragoe!  If you're in the area, you should come by.  If you miss the opening but still want to see the art, it'll be in the Springer Cultural Center gallery until the first week of December.

Here's the Facebook event page: Sibling Rivalries

Basic info on the show:
In March of 2014, Caitlin Lill (Nick's wife) issued Nick and Kate a challenge: make ten pieces of art, each creating an interpretation around the same ten themes. Acting as the "family curator," Caitlin will explore the striking similarities and hilarious differences between the artistic kin. Their assigned themes were:

- Futuristic
- Chimera
- Gaudy
- Calligraphy
- Minimal
- Carnival
- Wilderness
- Ocean Dwellers
- Brother/Sister
- Home

Nick and Katie's twenty theme pieces will come together in a show called ***Sibling Rivalries*** at the Champaign Park District Springer Cultural Center, running 10/16-12/4.

Join us for an artists reception on 10/16 from 5:30-7:30pm. Light refreshments will be provided.

Hey deviants.  It came to my attention...quite a while ago I guess, that I don't actually have information available on how to commission art from me if you're interested in that sort of thing.  So here's the deal:

I'm available for commissions involving any variation on the themes and styles that are currently seen in my gallery, and I'm willing to try new things (though I don't have a lot of time for trial-and-error these days).
If you're interested in commissioning something, contact me by note or e-mail (ncragoe@gmail.com).  Specify what you're looking for with as much detail as possible, or if you've got a general idea but don't know specifics, some examples of the kind of thing you're interested in would be helpful.  Prices vary widely (I've done stuff for $20, and I've done stuff for $200), but I usually ballpark the rates at about $5-$10 per hour - generally less if it's a project I'm interested in or if I'm feeling charitable, more if either the art or the client is a chore.
I can never guarantee exactly how long a project will take me, since my life is kind of nuts and is about to get exponentially more so with the introduction of a tiny baby, but I tend to get things done pretty quickly, particularly if it's an interesting project.

Let me know if there's anything I can do for you!

100 watchers!  It's taken a hundred thousand years, but it's a milestone for me, and it means a lot.  Thanks, visigodo1000!

Tribal art?

1 min read
This is the most popular piece of art that appears when you search "tribal" (at least as of 6:59PM CST tonight).
Tribal by Raveonmia

I'm not making a long post.  I'm inviting a conversation.  What is "tribal" about this piece?  What is "tribal" about "tribal art"?  What tribe is it referencing?  What area of the world, and why?  Whose tribe is it, if the artist posting the art is the one using it?  What does this kind of art accomplish for the artist?  For the people who still live in tribal societies, or identify as tribal members?  There are a lot of answers to this, but by far the biggest problem involved in this whole situation is the fact that we rarely consider the questions.
